Young Woman Victim of Stabbing at Library

By Amy Doeun

On Wednesday afternoon, the Arlington Hills Library at 1105 Greenbrier in St. Paul became the scene of a horrible crime. With children and young families in the area a confrontation began outside the library, moved inside and came to a head back outside.

Police reports and eye witnesses say that three young men, who would later be identified as Kou Vang (18), Meng Vang (19) and Vilai Yang (19), were in a car when they drove up to a young woman as she walked to the Library. They asked her what gang she belonged to. The three men say they thought she was a man.

After she entered the library the same three men approached the 19 year-old woman, hurling insults at her and swearing. A librarian asked them to leave. They presumably waited outside.

As the young woman was leaving the library the three attacked her. At one point she had Meng on the ground when Kou hit her repeatedly, apparently with a small pocket knife. When the fight was broken up it was discovered she had been stabbed 13 times.

Police identified the young men after tracing the car they were seen in to their address. Police obtained a search warrant for Meng and Kou. The two admitted getting into a fight though they thought they were fighting a man. Meng Vang claimed he did not have a weapon. When Kou was later arrested and searched, the police found a lighter with small knife attached. The Pioneer Press reports Vilai Yang, who was also arrested and charged as saying the Vang brothers "were disrespected by a person who he thought" was a male. Vilai was the last to be arrested.

All three have been charged with first degree assault. The victim was rushed to Regions Hospital. One stab wound punctured her lung. She is recovering and expected to be released. Meng and Kou do not have a prior police record.
